“Gratitude For The Little Things” 🕊
Bible Passage..
“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” — Psalm 118:24
It’s easy to look for happiness in the big moments. The milestones, achievements, holidays, or answered prayers.. but so much of life unfolds in the small and ordinary. The warmth of your morning tea, the laughter of a friend, sunlight breaking through grey clouds. These are little giftsthat can easily go unnoticed when life feels busy or heavy. God invites us not only to endure our days but to rejoice in them, even in their simplicity.
From a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) perspective, focusing on small positives can help shift our thinking patterns. Our brains are naturally wired to notice problems more than blessings. It'sa survival instinct known as negativity bias. To counter this, it helps to practise gratitude awareness. Each day, try to name three small moments that brought a flicker of joy or comfort. They might seem insignificant, but this simple habit gently rewires your mind to see goodness more easily.
In Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), this practice connects to mindfulness.. the act of being present. Instead of rushing through life or getting lost in future worries, we can pause and fully experience the moment we’re in. Feel the texture of your clothes, listen to the sounds around you, notice your breath, or appreciate the colours of the season. These are small doorways to peace.
Spiritually, noticing the little things teaches us to see God not just in miracles but in moments. The same Creator who paints sunsets also placed beauty in the mundane, in the rhythm of ordinary days. Jesus Himself often drew lessons from simple things: birds, lilies, bread, and seeds. Each was a reminder that heaven touches earth in everyday life.
So today, slow down. Look for God in the gentle and the overlooked. Joy is rarely found in perfect conditions; it’s found in noticing what’s already here. Let your heart whisper gratitude for the present moment, for this breath, for this day that the Lord has made.
Reflection Prompts..
1. What small moments have brought you quiet joy or peace recently?
2. How might you create space today to slow down and notice the beauty around you?
3. In what ordinary areas of life do you sense God’s gentle presence?
Closing Prayer..
Loving God, thank You for the little things .. for warmth, laughter, colour, and breath. Teach me to see Your hand in ordinary moments and to find joy in the simple blessings of today. May gratitude soften my heart and open my eyes to Your goodness all around me. Amen.
