“Light for the Next Step” 🕊
Bible..
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” - Psalm 119:105 (NIV)
There are seasons when life feels like walking through fog. The way ahead seems uncertain, decisions weigh heavily, and we long for clear direction. In those moments, God’s promise is not to flood our lives with bright certainty but to offer just enough light for the next step.
This verse from the Psalms invites us to trust the “lamp” rather than demand the spotlight. Spiritually, it’s a picture of daily guidance. God leading us one step at a time. Therapeutically, this is much like mindful grounding or the principle of present moment focus in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). When anxiety pulls us into “what ifs” about the future, or regret keeps us in the past, peace is found by returning to now.. to what we can actually see and do.
You might try this gentle grounding practice today: pause where you are, take a slow breath in through your nose, and exhale through your mouth. Notice one thing you can see, one thing you can feel, and one thing you can hear. Let this remind you that you are safe in the present moment. God’s light is already shining here, even if the rest of the road remains dim.
CBT also teaches us to challenge unhelpful thinking patterns that exaggerate fear or hopelessness. When your mind says, “I’ll never manage this,” respond with truth: “I have managed difficult things before, and I have help now.” This is not false optimism, it’s a realistic reframing rooted in experience and faith. God often strengthens us gradually, step by steady step.
Whether you are navigating work stress, caring for family, managing illness, or feeling spiritually adrift, remember this: you do not need to see the whole journey to walk faithfully. God’s light is always enough for today. Each act of kindness, each breath of courage, each small decision for peace.. they all become steps along a path held in His care.
Reflection Prompts..
1. What situation in your life feels uncertain or foggy right now?
2. How might focusing on “the next step” bring more peace than trying to see the whole path?
3. What small, value driven action could you take today that reflects trust in God’s guidance?
Closing Prayer..
Loving God, when the path ahead feels unclear, help me to rest in the light You give for today. Quiet my anxious thoughts and guide my steps with Your steady hand. Teach me to trust that Your grace will meet me, moment by moment, along the way. Amen.
