Finding Stillness in the Noise 🕊
Bible..
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
Modern life often feels like a constant stream of noise! Emails, deadlines, worries, notifications, and the quiet ache of comparison. Our minds rarely rest. Yet God’s invitation to “be still” is not simply about silence or inactivity, it is a call to return to awareness of His presence, even in the middle of ordinary chaos.
In cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), one helpful tool for managing racing thoughts is to notice rather than argue with them. When you catch yourself in a loop of “what ifs” or “should haves,” pause and name what is happening: “My mind is busy right now.” This simple act of awareness breaks the automatic cycle and opens space for gentler, truer thoughts.
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) teaches a similar lesson! That peace often begins when we stop trying to control every mental storm. Imagine sitting beside a river, watching leaves float past. Each leaf represents a thought. You do not have to pick them up or chase them downstream. You simply let them pass while staying grounded where you are.
Spiritually, stillness is not the absence of thought but the presence of trust. It is choosing to believe that God holds the details we cannot fix and carries the burdens we cannot name. The Lord is not asking us to earn calmness, but to rest in His sufficiency. In stillness we remember that the world keeps turning even when we pause, and that grace continues to flow even when we cannot.
Reflection Prompts..
1. What kinds of “noise” fill your mind or your day most often? How might you make a few quiet moments for your soul today?
2. When you notice your thoughts spiralling, what gentle phrase or Scripture could help you pause and breathe?
3. What does “being still” look like for you.. physically, mentally, or spiritually?
Prayer!
God of peace, teach me how to rest in Your presence when life feels overwhelming. Help me to notice my thoughts without fear, to let go of what I cannot control, and to trust that You are working even when I am still. May Your calmness fill my mind and Your love steady my heart. Amen.
