Daily Devotional - “Steady in the Storm”.
Bible verse..
“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.” - Mark 4:39 (NIV)
Reflection & Encouragement..
Life can often feel like being in that storm tossed boat! Waves of work, family, health, or uncertainty crashing all around. In the story, the disciples panicked while Jesus slept. Their fear was human; they saw danger and forgot who was with them. When He spoke peace into the storm, the wind obeyed and so did their hearts.
You may not be able to silence the external storms in your world, but you can learn to calm your inner response. Jesus still meets us there, not with condemnation for our anxiety, but with compassion. His presence doesn’t remove all turbulence, yet it anchors us so we don’t drift.
Remember, faith is not the absence of fear; it’s the decision to reach for peace in the middle of it. You are not weak for needing help or for practising ways to stay steady. The same grace that held the disciples afloat is available to you today.
Therapeutic Guidance:
Grounding through the senses (mindfulness): When anxiety rises, focus on your body’s contact with the present. Feel your feet on the ground, notice one colour in the room, take a slow breath in for four counts and out for six. This signals safety to your nervous system.
CBT reframe: Identify one recurring anxious thought. Ask: “Is this a fact, or a fear?” Then gently replace it with a balanced truth: “I can’t control everything, but I can take one small, calm action.”
Values in action (ACT principle): Instead of chasing control, ask, “What kind of person do I want to be in this storm?” Choose one small behaviour that reflects that.. a kind word, a pause before reacting, a moment of prayer.
Encouraging Message:
Peace isn’t something you must create,it’s something you receive. Each time you breathe deeply, notice your surroundings, or whisper a prayer, you are practising trust. You are learning to rest in a Love greater than your fears. Let today be less about fixing everything and more about remembering that you are not alone in the boat.
Reflection Prompts!
1. What current “storm” am I facing, and where can I notice signs of God’s presence within it?
2. Which grounding or calming technique helps me feel most connected to peace?
3. How can I live one small value led action today, even if the circumstances stay the same?
Closing Prayer..
Lord Jesus, calm the storms within me as You calmed the sea. Teach me to breathe, to trust, and to remember that You are with me even when the waves rise high. Help me act with gentleness, courage, and faith today. May Your peace guard my heart and mind. Amen.
