Switching Off to Tune In 🕊
Bible..
"Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” - Mark 6:31 (NIV)
Reflection..
It is easy to live at the mercy of the outside world. Social media, messages, notifications, noise, and endless news. We are connected to everyone and everything, except sometimes the people and the God who matter most. When Jesus spoke these words to His disciples, they had been busy serving and surrounded by crowds. His invitation was simple, step away and rest.
That same invitation still stands. There is wisdom in withdrawing for a while. Not to escape life, but to return to it renewed. Spiritually, “switching off” is an act of worship. It is choosing presence over pressure, quiet over chaos, depth over distraction.
Therapeutically, we know that constant stimulation keeps the nervous system in alert mode. The brain struggles to rest when there is no pause between inputs. One simple technique to restore balance is grounded disconnection:
Turn off your devices for a set period each day.
Go outdoors or sit somewhere peaceful.
Notice three things you can see, two you can hear, one you can feel.
As your senses settle, your mind begins to slow.
In Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), this practice of mindful presence helps you return to your values. Your relationships, faith, and the things that give life meaning. It becomes easier to engage deeply with what is right before you! A conversation, a meal, a prayer, a moment of laughter, or a good film.
As you step back from the world’s constant noise, you will often find that God’s voice grows clearer. His peace is not something you have to chase.. it’s already waiting beneath the clutter. Slowing down allows you to notice His gentle nudges and the quiet joys around you. Notice a friend’s kindness, a family moment, the beauty of stillness itself.
Switching off does not mean disconnecting forever, it just means reconnecting more intentionally. When you return to your phone, your work, or your commitments, you do so from a place of grounded peace rather than scattered distraction.
Reflection Prompts..
1. What activities or habits drain your attention and leave you feeling disconnected from God or loved ones?
2. How could you create a small daily ritual of disconnection, even ten minutes, to rest and refocus?
3. When did you last feel truly present with someone? What helped you stay there?
Prayer..
Lord, teach me the beauty of stepping away from the noise. Help me rest my mind, slow my pace, and draw close to You and those I love. In stillness, renew my heart and let Your peace fill the spaces I’ve been too busy to notice. Amen.
