You are WONDERFULLY made and there will never be another YOU! 🔥
One of the most exhausting things we can do is spend our lives trying to become someone that nobody can criticise. The problem is, that person doesn't exist.
No matter how kind you are, someone will think you're fake. If you're quiet, you'll be called shy or distant. If you're confident, you'll be called arrogant. If you set boundaries, you're selfish. If you help everyone, people may take advantage of you. The standards of the world change every five minutes, and somehow we're expected to keep up with them all.
Psychology talks about something called people pleasing, where we begin shaping our identity around keeping everyone else happy. It often comes from rejection, criticism, trauma, or growing up feeling like love had to be earned. We become experts at reading everyone else's emotions while completely losing sight of our own.
The trouble is, when your worth depends on other people's opinions, your confidence rises and falls with every compliment and every criticism. That's an exhausting way to live.
Jesus offers something completely different.
He never asked us to become a polished version of ourselves before coming to Him. He didn't wait for people to have perfect personalities, perfect pasts, or perfect lives. He met fishermen, tax collectors, people with messy histories, doubters, and those who had been rejected by society. He loved them before they had everything figured out.
Romans 5:8 reminds us, "But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
Notice that it says while we were still sinners. Not once we'd sorted ourselves out. Not after we'd become impressive. Before.
That doesn't mean Jesus leaves us where we are. His love changes us from the inside out. But change that comes from being loved is very different from change that comes from trying to earn love.
The world says, "Be enough."
Jesus says, "Come to Me."
The world says, "Perform."
Jesus says, "Abide."
The world says, "Fit in."
Jesus says, "Follow Me."
There is so much freedom in realising you were never created to be liked by everyone. Even Jesus, who was perfect, was misunderstood, rejected, criticised, falsely accused, and hated by many. If perfection couldn't please everyone, neither will we.
So stop apologising for the healthy parts of yourself. Laugh if you laugh loudly. Rest when you're tired. Say no when you need to. Be gentle if that's your personality. Be passionate if that's how God made you. Your identity isn't built on public opinion. It's built on being a child of God.
Therapy tip for today:
The next time you catch yourself worrying about what everyone thinks, pause and ask yourself one simple question.
"Am I trying to be accepted by people, or am I living faithfully as the person God created me to be?"
You'll never meet everyone's expectations, and thankfully, you were never asked to.
Jesus already knows everything about you. Every strength, every weakness, every awkward moment, every mistake, every scar, and every part of your story.
And He still chose you.
That is far more secure than the changing opinions of the world.
